Olympic Tribute

Here in Independence, Kansas, we are watching the Olympics in Vancouver as is the rest of the world. At the conclusion of the opening ceremonies, something happened that struck me as inspiring. When the pillars arose from the arena floor that would complete the cauldron centerpiece, one pillar was stuck and did not move into place. One might simply say there was a technical glitch and go on. However, I was reminded of a missing man formation that the military uses to honor a fallen comrade. The cauldron was lit and the games continue, as they should but with the death of the luge competitor from Georgia, it was somehow appropriate that everyone be reminded in such a visual way that something was missing from the whole.
